My name is Maryam and I’m from Tehran, Iran. My family and I came to Australia 2 years ago, after 18 months in detention centres.
It was after I came to Melbourne that I started painting in the art group run by MAFA. I had studied interior design in Iran, and painting had always been a love of mine.
Since then I have been part of a number of exhibitions with MAFA, and they have never stopped encouraging me to paint and draw.
When I am painting I draw on the imagery and culture of my local community. Children and other artists have an impact on my work, as I like to view my art through their eyes.
